Chromium metal is often added to steel to increase hardness and corrosion resistance. Exposure to hexavalent chromium (+6 valence) can occur during cutting, burning, and welding on stainless steel. It is also used in pigments and dyes and is used in electro plating operations. OSHA regulates hexavalent chromium under 29 CFR 1910.1026. The OSHA standard addresses initial and periodic monitoring, use of engineering and work practices controls, medical surveillance, use of personal protective equipment including respirators, housekeeping, training, and recordkeeping. CIH Services can conduct the air monitoring and provide other services in support of your hexavalent chromium compliance including ventilation assessments, program development, and training.
